Caprica Recap - Episode 11

And now for the second episode of the rest of the series, in which we find out what the other characters have been up to. Well, not really, but close enough I suppose. I am very patient after all, which is something that viewers really need to be in order to keep watching this show. Despite the still seemingly slow development of the plot, the things that have happened have been quite interesting. There are lots of small details that do a fair job of building emotion and tension, if not outright suspense. Instead of wondering what will happen next, I find myself wondering how it will happen and sometimes why. This is clearly a show more about thinking than action. Throughout the episode the location and time of events is chronicled, which I suppose gave a good idea of how quickly the events were taking place. Perhaps to quicken the pace? It was interesting to think that instead of all of these things happening simultaneously, there was a succession of events and a clear illustration of cause and effect. It became easier to see how intertwined everything is.

At the start of the episode Lacy is trying to be a terrorist some more, but she’s really terrible at it. The plan gets executed in the most inept way and while trying to escape everyone gives her a hard time for frakking up royal. But really the whole thing was pretty pitiful. That's what they get for hiring teenagers. So, naturally, she gets our of the car in a tantrum. The next scenes involve Sam and Joe, helping Daniel blackmail board members into voting for whatever he tells them to vote for. One member who refuses ends up committing suicide, and then his wife attacks Daniel’s car over it all crazy-like as he tells the driver not to stop. That’s cold. After that Cyrus brings Daniel his box-o-robot, and they make some  feeble conversation about Amanda before Cyrus leaves him alone with his robot/daughter.

The bulk of the episode detailed the rift in the STO between Clarice and Barnabas. In v-world somewhere she talks to the creepy robot voice which tells her that everyone hates her. She insists that her kids wouldn’t betray her, but the voice insists that Barnabas has turned them against her, using the independent bombing plan and the attempts to kill her as evidence. The voice taunts her into doing something about it, so at 4:00 in the morning she pays a visit to Pann (Zak Santiago), one of her 'kids'. He’s just relaxing, watching some television in the bath, and is horrified that Clarice’s scariness is in his presence. He admits that he was naughty, and begs forgiveness. Even with her forgiveness she tells him she’ll leave it up to god and pushes his TV into the water. Next up is Hippolyta (Aidan Dee), who tries to run away but is nabbed by Clarice’s husbands/henchmen.

After the botched plan, Lacy calls Barnabas to tell him what happened. He tells her he can’t seem to get in touch with Pan or Hippolyta. She tries to tell him blowing up airports wasn’t as easy as he said it would be, blah, blah, blah. He attacks her and asks if she’s Clarice’s mole, but she just whines that she did everything he asked of her and that her loyalty is with god. That night Keon, Lacy and Barnabas are discussing crazy Clarice. Lacy is thinking a truce would work, but Barnabas is convinced that Clarice wants to kill them all and that he needs to get her first. Keon tries to leave, saying that he knows Barnabas is insane and Barnabas shoots him in the neck for his sass. Just then Clarice and her hench-husbands show up and quickly subdue Barnabas and set bombs. That’s how it’s done, good job Clarice. After exchanging some words with her rival, Clarice and her crew leave with Lacy and when they get to their car she detonates the bomb. Which turns out to be pretty big actually. Lacy asks if Clarice is going to kill her and she replies that she hopes not. Humor!

While all of that was going on, Amanda is recovering from her ‘accident’ at Clarice’s cabin. She seems haunted by memories and nightmares and is increasingly suspicious of Clarice. Which is understandable since Clarice stopped sleeping since getting back from Gemenon, what with all the killing and all. She also sees her while conferring on her holo-band and hears her whispering Zoe’s name all spookily. She thinks back to when she woke up in the hospital to Clarice yelling at people and told her that she didn’t want to see Daniel. There’s another flashback of Daniel’s from when she did finally talk to him in the hospital about how it wasn’t her fault Zoe was being a bitch. She also confronted him about whether he had someone killed for the MCP chip which he still says was an unfortunate unintended consequence. She also has a pretty funny nightmare about Zoe being a complete evil brat over breakfast and then having red glowy eyes. Demon daughter!

Clarice going around killing her students/former followers catches the attention of the investigators, and Agent Durham (Brian Markinson) is still really determined to prove Clarice is an STO leader. No one seems to believe him so he approaches Amanda and plants the paranoia seed in her little brain. He asks her to become an informant and she gets upset but then begins thinking for once and putting things together. In hindsight, Clarice has been suspiciously nice to her at a pivotal time. Clarice comes home early that morning and proceeds to start drinking, and I’m amazed that she doesn’t notice the really freaky way that Amanda keeps staring at her. It’s like she can’t even hide her suspicion and Clarice is too busy to notice. In a shaky cam scene, Amanda goes back to her own house and gets a gun from a safe. With the camera still once more she gets driven back to the cabin. In the final scene Amanda enters the cabin to find Clarice almost napping. She appears to be crying as she talks about how upset she is that two of her students were killed. Amanda begins to reach for the gun but when Clarice tells her that she feels like Amanda’s her only confidant, she changes her mind and tells Clarice to tell her everything.

I suppose with Barnabas all blown up Clarice doesn’t have much resistance to assume her new power over the STO groups on Caprica. It will be interesting to see if Amanda becomes an informant or sympathizes with Clarice’s cause, that is if she tells the truth. Lacy’s motives still don’t make sense to me, but maybe I missed something or it will be explained later. Watching Amanda’s ideas formulate was interesting and yet I still can’t tell what she’ll do, because she just seems so crazy. She’s a lot easier to relate to now, maybe just because I’ve gotten used to her floaty detachment. Clarice is really developing into a terrifying character, and it is so entertaining to watch her be evil. Personally, the only thing I can think of about Daniel at the moment is that I wish he would shave. Also, I'm glad that there are plenty of scenes where characters are flipping through the cartoonishly sensationalist news. They must be included so that we know for sure that these things are all very serious, and that the news media is obnoxious in every society with too much information to process. The show's events are getting darker and more tangled, and I’m still wondering what’s going on in v-world. Maybe next Tuesday.
